TURKANA EXPEDITION
This expedition Northern Kenya
embraces the rigorous journey across the Chalbi desert to Sibiloi
Game Reserve traversing rugged country to the Frontiers of Kenya.
Transport is either by four-by- four wheel land cruisers or the
more comfortable 4WD Pajero which seats between four and seven passengers.
Accommodation is in two-person tents that are pitched at designated
points on the safari route. The experienced driver is also a trained
tour guide familiar with the flora and fauna of Kenya while the
professional cook is able to make the most sumptuous meals over
an ordinary wood fire. The combination is a recipe for an unforgettable
safari to the remotest territories of Kenya.
DAY I: NAIROBI -ABERDARES
Depart Nairobi driving northwest for the Aberdares National Park,
home to the black leopard, the Bongo, the forest hog and a variety
of fauna only to be found in this mountain forest. Dinner and overnight
in a cabin in the forest.
DAY 2: ABERDARES - MERU NATIONAL
PARK
Early start for the Meru National Park, home to Elsa of the "Born
Free" fame. Lunch en-route while the afternoon is spent flashing
out the vehicle-shy animals that are in this park. Dinner and overnight
at campsite.
DAY 3: MERU - SAMBURU
Pre-breakfast game drive then proceed after breakfast to Samburu
Game Reserve. Picnic lunch is taken en-route. Afternoon game drive,
dinner and overnight at the campsite.
DAY 4: SAMBURU
A full day is spent viewing the species that are only to be found
north of the equator, including the antelope - giraffe (gerenuk),
oryx, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich. All
meals and overnight at campsite. (Samburu tribal dances by the campfire
under the star-lit tropical skies occupy most of the evening).
DAY 5: SAMBURU - MARSABIT
An early start for Marsabit, a misty land of crater lakes and forests.
Lunch is taken in the park and an afternoon game drive in search
of the Greater and Lesser Kudu and a large variety of other wildlife
occupies most of the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at campsite.
DAY 6: MARSABIT -KALACHA
Depart from Marsabit in the morning after breakfast and proceed
through desert country to Kalacha outback mission station for lunch.
The afternoon is spent relaxing at the pool or walking through the
small settlement interacting with the local people. Dinner and overnight
at the station campsite.
DAY 7: KALACHA - SIBILOI
This day is spent traversing the Chalbi desert to Sibiloi National
Park and Koobi Fora, home of the Homo Erectus. Lunch is en-route
and a game drive is undertaken as you drive through this remote
park to the Bandas close to Lake Turkana. Dinner and overnight at
the wildlife cabins.
DAY 8: SIBILOI (KOOBI FORA)
We leave the Bandas to try and trace the "origins of Mankind"
at this famous archeological site and visiting the museum with its
treasure trove. Lunch at the Bandas and an afternoon game drive
to flash out the species that are located here. Dinner and overnight
at Bandas.
DAY 9: LAKE TURKANA
An early start for the southern drive to Loiyangalani. Picnic lunch
is taken en-route and we arrive at this settlement next to Lake
Turkana in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at campsite.
DAY 10: LAKE TURKANA (LOIYANGALANI)
The day is spent at leisure, vis-à-vis, interacting with
the local community in the settlement; visiting the El Molo people
- one of the smallest tribes in the world; taking a boat trip on
the lake or just relaxing at the swimming pool of one of the lodges
to cool down from the excessive desert heat. Dinner and overnight
at campsite.
DAY 11: MARALAL
After breakfast leave Lake Turkana and drive through South Horr
to the colorful town of Maralal. Lunch is taken en-route. Dinner
and overnight at campsite.
DAY 12: MARALAL - BARINGO
The morning is spent sightseeing in this beautiful town of the Samburu
people where wildlife stroll in the streets rubbing "shoulders"
with the human residents! Mid-morning departure for Baringo which
is reached in the early evening.
DAY 13: BARINGO - LAKE NAIVASHA
After a morning spent bird watching depart this ornithological wonderland
for Nakuru and on to Lake Naivasha. The evening is pent relaxing
by this Rift Valley Lake. Dinner and overnight at campsite or economy
accommodation by the Lake Shore.
DAY 14: LAKE NAIVASHA - HELL'S
GATE - NAIROBI
After breakfast we hire bicycles and take the trail to Hell's Gate
where we spend the morning biking, hiking and wildlife viewing at
the Hell's Gate Game Park, the only one of its kind where you can
walk and ride in the park. Picnic lunch at the park. Ride back to
our campsite in the early afternoon and depart the Lake for Nairobi
at about 4pm arriving at the Kenyan capital at about 6pm.
