MARA SERENA LODGE ****
An interpretation of a traditional Maasai Manyatta
village of domed huts, the 74 room Mara Serena Safari Lodge is
set on the saddle of a hill overlooking the 1,800 square kilometres
of rolling plains, woodlands and rivers that make up the Maasai
Mara Triangle - one of the world's richest wildlife sanctuaries.
The Serena has the most spectacular view of the surrounding landscape,
with its game and bird life. Facilities include restaurant, lounge,
bar, outdoor pool with lounge chairs, tables, umbrellas and towels.
Telephone, fax, and radio, 24 hour Nurse on call and Flying Doctors
Service. All rooms are individual "huts" - spread out
to give each one uninterrupted view of the plains, the meandering
riverine forest and the silhouetted hills beyond. All huts are
en suite with bath and shower. The Lodge is the only property
of its kind in the Mara Triangle - and, as such, its guests can
be assured a high degree of privacy when enjoying their safari
experience.
MPATA SAFARI LODGE ****
Mpata Safari Club is a five star
hotel voted "The Best Safari Lodge in Kenya" by The
Kenyan Association of Travel Agents. The lodge - designed by Edward
Suzuki - one of the most respected architects in Japan - is perched
on a hilltop with a breathtaking view of the Mara reserve. Guests
stay in individual cottages well spaced along the top of the escarpment
offering panoramic views of sunrise on the horizon. There are
11 suites and 12 deluxe units, each with interlocking curves separating
bedroom, bathroom and verandah. With emphasis on comfort and a
unique combination of interior design, the suites have a lounge,
kitchenette and best of all, an outdoor Jacuzzi.
SIANA INTREPIDS Tented Camp****
Fringed by marshes and surrounded by ghostly
Fever trees, Siana Springs is situated on the eastern edge of
the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Built on a site chosen by 1950's
game warden Major Lyn Temple-Boreham, the grand-scale tented camp
was established in partnership with the neighbouring Maasai, who
continue to graze their cattle in harmony with the wildlife. Perfectly
recapturing the romance of the early pioneers, Siana Springs possesses
a tranquil atmosphere, with generous safari-style tents and shaded
trees offering complete privacy in the lush, unspoiled setting.
A convivial dining area offers hearty cuisine, while the swimming
pool is an irresistible oasis on hot days.
MARA HIPPO Safari Lodge ****
Located at the South Eastern end of the Mara
Triangle the Mara Hippo Safari Lodge is a beautiful tented camp
cum lodge that blends with the game ladened landscape of the Mara.
Built on a former riverbed, the accommodation is made of 15 tents
all ensuite under grass thatched roofs and five cottages; also
ensuite. There is a swimming pool and satellite television is
available for those who would wish to catch up with international
events in the middle of the African savanna.
TREETOPS****
Treetops is the original tree lodge, legendary
for its historical royal connection, for the animals it attracts
and for the sheer joy of exploring a tree house. The lodge rises
straight out of the ground on stilts. It has four decks and a
rooftop-viewing platform. Solely dedicated to game viewing, the
accommodation is compact and cosy. The
50 twin bedded rooms are small and neat and cosy like cabins on
board ship. Dinner is imaginatively served at refectory tables
with bench seating, which heightens the sense of adventure and
stimulates conversation. The emphasis is on making as little noise
as possible so as not to scare away the animals. For this reason
children under 5 are not allowed at Treetops.
LAKE ELEMENTAITA****
This exclusive lodge
was built by English Settler Lord Galbraith Cole in 1916. A red
brick with shady terraces, an internal courtyard pannelled wall
and a sitting room with library and log fire. The 33 double rooms
are in newer "cottages" nestled away in a lush flowered
garden behind the house. The house overlooks Lake Elementaita
a Ramsar Site (Wetland of international importance). The lake
home to millions of lesser flamingos is an important stopover
for migrating birds - over 350 species have been spotted. An original
and less obtrusive way of seeing the wild life is by ox waggon.
Lord Cole's Memorial, built on a rocky outcrop, is an enchanting
spot for a sundower after a safari or for a champagne breakfast.
Other activities include horse-riding, visits to the warm water
spa which flows into the lake or to the Kariandusi pre-historic
site where anthropologist Dr. Lewis Leakey found some of the oldest
remains of mankind.
SAMBURI SERENA Safari Lodge****
Situated on the fertile
banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, in the centre of the Samburu Game
Reserve in Kenya's rugged, semi-arid Northern Province, Samburu
Serena Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of riverfront life. The
rustic yet convivial lodge blends with the environment by making
full use of native materials. All guestrooms have private verandas
that overlook the river where crocodiles feed in full view. The
surrounding terrain is renowned for rare game; long-necked gerunuk,
Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx. Leopards are
frequent passers by. The accommodation is in 62 deluxe rooms,
including 8 family rooms. A swimming pool is also centrally located
to allow clients to cool off from the tropical heat.
